Manitoba has developed its first homegrown ergonomics and human factors specialist designation aimed at helping reduce the growing rate of lost-time claims due to musculoskeletal injuries.
Safety Services Manitoba (SSM) is introducing the first made-in-Manitoba ergonomics and human factors designation — Certified Ergonomics and Human Factors Specialist (CEHFS).
Ergonomics tackles a growing source of time-loss injuries — strains and other injuries to the neck, shoulders, arms, wrists, legs and back. According to an SSM statement, these musculoskeletal injuries have accounted for 60 per cent or more of all time-loss injury claims accepted by the province's Workers' Compensation Board since 2005.
SSM is currently developing the Certified Ergonomics and Human Factors Specialist program with Dr. Stephan Cooper, a chiropractor, researcher and health ergonomist based in Winnipeg. The course will be a week-long intensive study that covers all the basics of ergonomics:
• Occupational injuries
• Forces at work (biomechanics)
• Ergonomic assessment methods
• Risk analysis tools
• Office ergonomics
• Industrial ergonomics
• Environmental concerns
• Ergonomics workplace design
• Work capacity, stress and fatique
• Systems design
The CEHFS program will provide safety professionals with the training they need to recognize and assess ergonomic issues in the workplace, and to design and implement solutions that decrease the risk to workers.
Cooper holds a Doctor of Chiropractic from Cleveland Chiropractic College and a Master’s of Health Ergonomics from the University of Derby. He has published and presented his work in Canada and internationally. Through his private practice, Spectrum Health Centre, he consults with large and small organizations on injury prevention, return-to-work, ergonomics and disability management.
The first Certified Ergonomics and Human Factors Specialist program will be held November 21 to 25 at SSM's training facility at 3 - 1680 Notre Dame Ave., Winnipeg. The full course costs $1,995.
