Announcing the 2015 Canada’s Safest Employers

Canadian Occupational Safety is pleased to announce the winners of the fifth annual awards for occupational health and safety excellence.
Canada’s Safest Employers awards boast 10 industry-specific categories, ranging from hospitality to mining and natural resources. Companies are judged on a wide range of occupational health and safety elements including employee training, OHS management systems, incident investigation, emergency preparedness and innovative health and safety initiatives.

The winning companies were celebrated at a gala event in Toronto on Oct. 28.

A special Young Worker Safety award was added this year to recognize companies with excellent policies in place for their young workers.

Also new this year is Canada’s Best Health + Safety Culture, the top prize available. In partnership with Workplace Safety and Prevention Services, this award recognizes companies that not only have achieved a top notch safety culture within their own walls, but that also spread the safety message through their community and beyond.

A special Wellness award is also handed out to companies who have excellent programs in place to support an employee’s overall well-being. A Psychological Safety award was awarded to companies that are committed to employee mental health.

Roxanne McKendry, manager of employee health and safety at Carewest in Calgary, took home the award for Safety Leader of the Year. This is the only award in the Canada’s Safest Employers umbrella that recognizes an individual’s contribution to workplace safety rather than an entire organization’s.

Watch for the October/November 2015 issue of COS for complete coverage on the winners. (The Safety Leader of the Year will be profiled in the December/January issue.)

Congratulations to the 2015 winners. Click on the company name of each gold winner for an exclusive video outlining its award-winning programs.
