N.L. company fined $6K after worker pinned under vehicle at auto shop

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A Newfoundland company has been fined $6,000 after an accident at an auto repair shop that pinned a worker under a vehicle.

The provincial government says ERL Enterprises Ltd. pleaded guilty to two violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
The government says the incident occurred in September 2010 at an auto repair shop on Blackmarsh Road in St. John's.

The worker suffered serious injuries to his back and ribs.

The government says the company pleaded guilty to failing to provide the information, instruction, training, supervision and facilities necessary to ensure the safety of workers.

The company also admitted to a charge of failing to ensure that safe work procedures were followed at the workplace.

A charge against a supervisor with ERL Enterprises has been set over to Nov. 2.

The supervisor was charged with an alleged failure to provide proper oral or written instructions regarding precautions necessary to protect workers.
