Construction company fined $19K for unsupported excavation

Firm failed to ensure excavation was sloped, benched or shored

Mondiale Development has been fined $19,017 for an incident that occurred in Vancouver.

WorkSafeBC inspected this firm's work site and observed an open excavation. The unsupported excavation was 2.4 metres (7.75 feet) deep with vertical cut walls on three sides. WorkSafeBC determined that one of the firm's workers had been in the excavation to expose a utility line.

The firm failed to ensure that, before worker entry, the excavation was sloped, benched, shored or otherwise supported as required. This was a high-risk violation.
