Crane rental company, supervisor fined nearly $400,000

Worker struck, crushed by apex portion of tower crane

Crane rental agency Rapicon has been fined $300,000 and Aaron Thomas, a self-employed crane contractor, was fined $86,250 for the death of a worker.

 

The worker was struck and crushed by the apex portion of a tower crane structure being lifted from its mountings by a mobile crane. The worker received fatal injuries.

 

Thomas pleaded guilty to Section 2(2)(a) of the OHS Act, failing to protect the health and safety of another worker. 

 

Rapicon pleaded guilty to Section 2(5) of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, as a contractor directing the activities of employers involved in work at a work site failing to ensure the employers complied with Section 189 of the OHS Code and equipment that could be dislodged or moved was not contained or restrained to eliminate danger to workers.
