As the radiation safety officer at Carleton University in Ottawa, Norm Barton says inspectors from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) usually tell him when they plan to come and inspect the way the school handles radioactive material, to ensure safe practices. But Barton also knows that the inspectors might just as easily drop by without warning — and the university always needs to be ready.
