COALHURST, Alta. — A man in southern Alberta is dead after he was struck on the head while lifting a concrete block with a crane.

The 23-year-old Lethbridge resident was killed early Thursday afternoon near Coalhurst, about 210 kilometres south of Calgary.
The man was pronounced dead at hospital. His name has not been released.

RCMP say a preliminary investigation shows the victim was fatally injured when a shackle hooked to the block snapped and hit him.

Police and Occupational Health and Safety are investigating.

Quoting Dave Bennett:
Another sad story. Unfortunately lifting equipment is abused on a regual basis in both industry and construction sectors and very often inadequate inspection of the equipment can lead to failure. Shackles don't fail for no reason at all. It is due to to 2 factors; overloading or using a defective piece of lifting media.

Or using it incorrectly or for a purpose for which it was not intended.

What a shame. My daughter works there, and was one of the first on site. She told me that they have a good safety program, and had just had a crane safety meeting the day before. He was a young man who had been there for over four years and had worked into a supervisor position. My heart goes out to all who witnessed and have been affected by this accident.
