Workplace Safety North announces winners of safety excellence awards

Fleming’s Trucking 3rd-time winner of President's Award

Each year, Workplace Safety North (WSN) recognizes Ontario workplaces with a strong safety culture.

The Workplace Excellence Awards shine a spotlight on the health and safety achievements of association member firms in mining, forestry, and paper, printing and converting businesses, as well as small businesses in northern Ontario with fewer than 50 employees. This year, WSN also introduced a new award category, Northern Ontario Business, for companies located in northern Ontario, regardless of industry sector.

“The award winners are positive role models and deserve special recognition,” said Paul Andre, WSN acting president and CEO. “By making health and safety a priority in the workplace, it sends a message to employees, customers, and the community in general, that a company is proactive and a business leader.

“We’re proud to welcome returning winners, Fleming’s Trucking and Logging from the Sault Ste. Marie region, third-time winner of the President’s Award for ongoing excellence in health and safety in both the forestry and small business sectors,” said Andre.

All Workplace Excellence Award submissions are considered for the President’s Award, and scoring is based on self-assessment as well as statistical performance over the past two calendar years. The winners of the President's Award are:

•Fleming’s Trucking and Logging Inc., Hilton Beach (Forestry sector and small business sector)

• WestRock Company of Canada Inc., Guelph (Paper, printing and converting sector)

•DMC Mining Services, Vaughan (Mining sector)

•Nordic Minesteel Technologies Inc., North Bay (Northern Ontario Business (non-WSN sector)

“Congratulations to all winners for your commitment to workplace health and safety,” said Andre. “I’m honoured to recognize your dedication to workers’ well-being, and to creating and maintaining healthy and safe workplaces – well done.”
