Investment will put workers back on the job in B.C.

The federal and provincial governments recently announced an investment of more than $700,000 for three projects that will put unemployed resource workers in the Cariboo region back on the job. Funding is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund and the Job Opportunities Program.

The announcement was made by Dick Harris, Member of Parliament for Cariboo-Prince George, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification and Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett on behalf of Community and Rural Development Minister Ben Stewart.

“I’m pleased to announce our government’s support for this project,” said MP Harris, in a recent release. “Investments such as these are creating jobs, supporting Canadians who are facing challenging times, and laying the foundations for our future prosperity.”

The funding through the Community Adjustment Fund and the Job Opportunities Program will support improvements at three heritage sites, with 21 workers in the region gaining short-term job experience. Additional funding through the Tuition Assistance Program under the Community Development Trust is also being provided to the Board of Education of School District 28 and the College of New Caledonia Quesnel Campus to coordinate and deliver the Heritage Building Conservation Certificate, empowering local workers with new skills and expertise to the benefit of British Columbians.  

“Through this program, workers are paid a living wage that is consistent with the skills and experience required to carry out the work,” said Barnett. “These projects help preserve historic sites that are anchor destinations drawing locals and tourists to rural BC, standing as legacies for future generations.”

The three-year $86.25 million Job Opportunities Program, now in its final year, was first announced in May 2008 as a component of the Community Development Trust through funding provided by the Government of Canada. In July 2009, the Government of Canada and Province of British Columbia each committed up to an additional $30 million towards the program.

The Government of Canada’s contribution to the Job Opportunities Program supports project costs that meet all the federal requirements for funding under the Community Adjustment Fund. The federal contribution under Canada’s Economic Action Plan will help stimulate the economy and keep Canadians working during the economic downturn.

The Province of British Columbia’s contribution to the Job Opportunities Program is part of its commitment to provide stability for workers and communities, maintain the workforce during the economic downturn, and help British Columbians gain new skills to be successful in the future.

A part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Community Adjustment Fund is a two-year, $1 billion national program that is providing an economic stimulus by supporting projects that create jobs and maintain employment in rural communities.
