Light curtain
Omron has developed a multi-lingual safety light curtain. Its construction is simple with two parallel arrays of sensors used to control access to the hazardous equipment by emitting harmless infrared light curtain control circuit initiates a stop signal to the guarded machine. The curtains can be mounted on horizontal or vertical planes. While the curtains are generally very reliable the problem that this manufacturer has addressed is one having to do with a potential language barrier. If a wire should break or a DIP switch is set to the wrong value the machine will use internal diagnostics to analyze the problem and will summarize it for the user, which can be translated. Omron’s light safety curtains come with stickers in eight languages — English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, German and Italian. Every sticker has a QR code that can be scanned by a safety professional with a smart-phone or tablet whenever a problem shall occur. Scanning the code takes the user to an online troubleshooting support page in the user’s language, keyed to diagnostic signals given out by the light curtain.
