WorkSafeNB focuses on residential construction safety

WorkSafeNB has launched a new Safety Excellence NB portal to help New Brunswickers better understand safety obligations in the residential construction industry.

The Crown corporation is also consulting industry organizations and visiting project sites, delivering safety talks and providing tools to help employers better prepare for WorkSafeNB health and safety officer visits to residential construction sites.

“This is part of a long-term strategy to reduce injuries in this industry and increase awareness on construction safety legislation,” said Tim Petersen, WorkSafeNB’s acting president and CEO.

“Injuries can have devastating effects — not just on workers, but their families, friends, co-workers and employers. By educating industry partners, we provide the knowledge, tools and awareness they need to better protect themselves and their employees.”

WorkSafeNB began focusing on education and compliance efforts in the residential construction industry last year with the addition of two dedicated health and safety officers for the sector.

WorkSafeNB is also educating homeowners on their responsibilities when taking on a residential renovation or construction project.

“Homeowners should ensure they hire competent and qualified contractors and workers for any home renovation or new construction project. They should ask about a company’s safety record and ensure the firm is properly insured,” Petersen said.
