Slabs appear to have fallen on worker while being moved
Tragedy struck the bustling industrial complex in the Northeast of Calgary Tuesday afternoon, as a fatal workplace accident claimed the life of an unidentified individual.
At approximately 1:30 pm local time, emergency services were called to the Hopewell business park, situated along Hopewell Place and 27th Street in the Northeast. According to the Calgary Fire Department, large marble slabs fell on a worker.
Paramedics along with a technical rescue team from the Calgary Fire Department worked tirelessly to remove the heavy marble slabs that had fallen onto the worker, but they were unable to save the worker.
The victim's age and gender have not been disclosed, in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations designed to protect the privacy of individuals. The employer has not been named either.
Occupational Health and Safety investigators swiftly arrived at the scene and initiated their thorough examination. According to CTV News Calgary, they have been diligently documenting the incident, collecting evidence crucial to their ongoing investigation. Police and fire department personnel had departed the area an hour and a half earlier, leaving behind only an abandoned forklift and multiple marble slabs strewn across the parking lot.
The workplace accident appears to have occurred during the transportation of large marble slabs using a forklift and a wooden structure. The exact sequence of events leading to the tragic incident remains unclear at this point. Occupational Health and Safety officials are diligently working to determine the official cause of death and to ascertain whether any workplace safety regulations were violated.
