Using technology to reduce arc flash risk

b_200_0_16777215_0___images_stories_arc_flash.jpgAlthough arc flash hazards have existed since mankind began using electricity, increasing deaths, injuries and property loss from arcing faults have led to increased awareness of the issue and investigation into methods of protection.

According to statistics compiled by CapSchell Inc, a Chicago-based research and consulting firm that specializes in preventing workplace injuries and deaths, there are five to ten arc-flash explosions that occur in electric equipment every day, resulting in medical treatment.
b_200_0_16777215_0___images_stories_2009_incidents_accidents.jpgEvery project comes with some degree of hazard attached to the working site. Hazards can take the form of environmental factors at the site, engineering designs of the project or the type of equipment being used for scheduled tasks.

From a safety standpoint, the prevention of serious events — from start up to completion of the project — is a measure of success of that project.
ORLANDO, Fla. – Safety does not have to be a huge expense, in fact, the best safety initiatives are free.

This was the message that executives from three huge and successful organizations communicated to many of the attendees at the National Safety Council’s annual conference and exhibition.
