Z1610 - PPE For First Responders

Responding to the needs of Canada’s emergency services personnel, CSA Standards and the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) have developed the first national standard for protection of First Responders from Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Events. This standard provides risk-based guidance to first responders on selecting & using the appropriate level and type of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when responding to a CBRN event.
Fire, police and emergency medical services are the first responders in more than 90% of emergencies. Currently, most first responders have only hazardous material (HazMat) or Dangerous Goods (DG) standards to guide them in responding to a CBRN incident. Z1610 will have significant impact in assisting first responder organizations in the selection, use, capabilities and limitations of CBRN personal protective equipment, enabling them to do their jobs more safely, with greater protection & functionality.
The standard was launched on January 25th at a media event held in a Toronto subway station. The event was attended by a number of dignitaries, including the Honorable Vic Toews, Minister for Public Safety. To see the press coverage of the event, click here.
